Vela Lounge.. By way of pizza parlor?

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Seattle’s got a new hot spot, or so we’ve heard? Vela launched their grand opening last week and word on the street is that the former pizza parlor isn’t close to being a bona fide nightclub, even with Seattle’s sub par standards.

The approximate 350 capacity venue offers the feel of high school hallways with cheap linoleum, obnoxious fluorescent lighting and their outdoor patio/”cabana” area (which was supposed to be the icing on the cake) produces an atmosphere one would imagine similar to that of a garish prison yard, confined by concrete walls.

Though Vela isn’t quite finished and they appear to have much more up their sleeve, it’s still exactly what Seattle needs - new venues. We’re crossing our fingers they’ll come out of left field and give us a little something more.

atrak

Where to begin when you’re trying to summarize all the important bullshit and highlights of the career of a flourishing prodigy? Oy. We’ll start here: Montreal, 1995. Alain “A-Trak” Macklovitch, age 13, invests his inherent Bar Mitzvah money in a set of turntables and a mixer and two years later effortlessly takes the title of 1997 DMC World Champion.. at age 15. Tone set? Okay.

Since then, he’s taken home 5 world turntablism championship titles (amongst many others); toured the globe with the likes of Q-Bert, Craze and Kanye West; founded 2007’s “most buzzworthy label,” Fool’s Gold whose mission is “dedicated to bringing you the crème de la crop in club music.”

This kid pretty much emerged from the depths of .. well, Montreal, and kind of took over the world of turntablism with so much ease, you’d think a caveman could do it.

ANYWAY, July 18th, A-Trak along with Treasure Fingers (Fool’s Gold, Evol Intent) and Theophilus London will be taking over Chop Suey (1325 E Madison, Seattle) for their 10,000 LB Hamburger Tour, with local acts, The Dowlz and OK Dave.

So, the moral of this story is: This is going to be a dope show with amazing talent and you should probably check them out.

Yep.

Seattle, cloning people?

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Seattle may be known for it’s coffee drinkers, techies and 90’s grunge bands but there’s no denying Seattle natives aren’t exactly what the rest of the country would call, fashion forward. What people here don’t seem to grasp is that fashion isn’t about how much money you do or do not spend on the clothes you present yourself in, it encompasses so much more; glamour, beauty, style. It’s a culture that manifests a collective art of our peoples’ current expression.

My gripe here is the boys and girls that think their Affliction tees, $300 designer jeans and token Louis purse warrant some sort of fashionisto/fahionista recognition. Don’t get it twisted, your cookie cutter image is not only easily replicable, it’s more than likely 3 seasons old.

C’mon Seattle, you can do better than that.

Seattle Man vs. Snoop Dogg, Day 1.

Friday, April 24th, 2009

snoop_dogg

Today kicked off the first day of opening statements in a civil trial against rapper, Snoop Dogg, by a Seattle man who claims the artist and his entourage severely beat and robbed him after jumping on stage in a concert in a Seattle in 2005. Richard Monroe, Jr. is now seeking $22 million in damages against Snoop (Calvin Broadus).

Monroe was under the impression he had permission to join Snoop and his entourage on stage during “Gin n Juice” but in turn was allegedly beaten and robbed by the performer and friends. And there’s a video recording of the incident to bat. Considering Snoop already owes the state of California over $280 thousand in taxes, one would imagine the rapper is sweating major bullets right about now.

There’s no denying Seattle Nightlife as whole has taken a hit with economic crisis the rest of the country has undergone but we’re proud to announce that, as the industry has been hurting, we are back. 3 weeks of sold out events across the board, hundreds of heads and thousands of photos later - Nightlife is making a comeback.

People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

In a city that barely holds a stick in comparison to the rest of the country as far as nightlife goes, we seem to be easily convinced of this grand disillusion that Seattle encompasses all that makes the world go round; that we’re untouchable, so to speak. What amuses me more than anything is how quick people are to point a finger at someone else for things they’re equally as reproachable of doing.

Hello, Pot, this is Kettle and you are black.

Nightlife as a whole is susceptible to the criticisms of anyone and everyone; whether they’re jaded by something, not part of the “inner circle” of their choice or those who simply chose not to live their lives in the limelight. But the criticisms and maxims come with the territory, as they do in any other industry. Stereotypes and prejudices don’t define people and if you truly believe otherwise you’ve got another thing coming. Hell, if they did I’m sure every mortgage broker or loan officer in the past two years would have been to rehab twice and filed bankruptcy by now, every “Joeys Girl” would have made their way through every social group in the city and those of you who simply enjoy going out on a regular basis would be deemed coke heads and groupies.. or both.

What a lot of people do not take into account is that behind the scenes, first and foremost, what we do is a business; the limelight comes with the territory. No one in their right mind is going to let some farcical speculation get to them in this industry. Especially when it’s coming from someone hiding behind the comfort of complete anonymity. I guarantee whoever feels the need to berate others for anything, whether between friends or on a public forum, is losing more sleep than the people they feel so compelled to talk about. Like I have always said, if people are talking, you must be doing something right. It’s flattering, really.

And flattery will only get you so far… When we’re sittin pretty w/ a hefty skrill flow in 5 years and you’re still running your mouth about whoever pissed in your cheerios that week, just remember: You are only as good as the love you have for other people, including yourself.

Think about it.

:)

Cheers.

Bringing back Seattle Nightlife - 1 Proposal at a time !!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

To summarize, there is a proposal in our state legislature that could completely revitalize nightlife as we know it. It does a few things, most importantly it removes the cities regulatory power over NightClubs. This essentially eliminates the cities ability to protest liquor licenses, which is something that normally occurs after any minor incident. It also makes it easier for entrepreneurs to open up new clubs as it eliminates costly food requirements. Lobby your state congressmen/women, lets work together and make this happen.

Guess what happens on February 27, 2009 at 8:00pm, at McKay Events Center in Orem, Utah.  Mc Hammer and Vanilla Ice return for a live performance together.  This show isn’t about the confused heavy metal rapper or the super flashy popstar turned wanna be gangster turned cash4gold.com spokesperson.  This show is about those 2 huge albums that shattered the charts in the 90’s, the albums that not a single soul cares about anymore.

You know what though, this sounds interesting, maybe we’ll bring the show to Seattle, any takers ?

Imperial VIP 1yr Annivesary

Congratulations is in order !! One of Seattle’s 10,000 promotion companies is turning a year old this Friday.  It may not seem like much, but lasting a year in this industry is a very formidable challenge considering all these bs you have to deal with on a nightly basis.  They’ll be celebrating at Last Supper Club this Friday, check it out if you have time.
